Chapter 347 - 345: Boasting and Embarrassment
Chapter 347 - 345: Boasting and Embarrassment
Lin Wan Yi grabbed the corner of the red cloth and pulled it back forcefully.
Three pots of extremely lush-growing wheat were revealed to everyone. The stalks were twice as robust as ordinary wheat, and the heavy heads drooped down, with grains so plump they seemed to be bursting through the husks, and even sparkling droplets of water hung on the leaves.
Beside the wheat pots, there was a shallow bamboo basket containing a few ripe red tomatoes and some cucumbers with flowery tops and prickly skin.
The meeting room was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
Smith suddenly stood up. His elbow toppled the glass teacup beside him, and with a "crash", the tea trickled down the wooden table. He didn’t bother to wipe it, taking long strides toward the iron cart, nearly pressing himself against the wheat stalks.
"My God! Were these grown in saline-alkali soil?" Smith reached out and touched the rough husks, turning his head to the translator beside him.
The translator was a thin man in his thirties. Already highly tense from the earlier "mud incident" in the backyard, sweat was now pouring down his forehead like beans as he faced Smith’s barrage of technical questions.
"Mr. Smith asked... if these were grown in saline-alkali soil... and also... asked about osmotic pressure..." The translator stammered, his face pale.
The meeting room had two large iron stoves burning, making the air stifling. The translator opened his mouth but suddenly swayed and fell sideways.
"Xiao Liu! Quick, take him to the infirmary!" The director, anxious, slammed the table and shouted.
Several staff members rushed to move the fainted translator out.
Smith, still anxious, gestured while repeating words like "rhizobia" and "cold resistance index".
The director was agitated, like an ant on a hot pan: "Old Chen! Quickly find someone to fill in! We can’t have a pause at this critical moment!"
Director Chen looked around and saw Bai Tingting huddled in the corner. He pulled his niece out: "Didn’t you learn some foreign languages? Go explain to the foreign guest!"
Bai Tingting was handed a copy of the agriculture materials in Chinese, her legs trembling. With only a middle school level of English, she only recognized a few letters here and there.
Bracing herself, she walked up to Smith, looking at the specialized terms in the materials, and stammered: "This is... this is wheat... very good! Very big!"
Smith frowned deeply. He pointed at the base of the seedlings: "I’m asking about the root tolerance to extreme cold! What are the numbers?"
Bai Tingting was completely dumbfounded. She turned to Director Chen, almost in tears: "Uncle, what cold is he asking about?"
"Useless!" The director slapped the table, shaking the teacup lid, and cursed in anger.
Lin Wan Yi pushed Bai Tingting aside.
"Mr. Smith, let me explain."
The pure British accent resonated through the meeting room, with clear pronunciation and a steady tone.
Smith’s eyes lit up as he immediately turned to her.
Lin Wan Yi took a kraft paper notebook from her canvas bag and flipped to the page with the recorded data.
"This batch of wheat seeds has undergone special cold-resistance treatment. We added a specific ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium during soil improvement, stabilizing the pH value at around 7.5." While explaining fluently in English, Lin Wan Yi pulled out a seedling and displayed its developed roots.
"As you can see, through improvement, the nitrogen-fixing ability of the roots has increased by 30%. Even in a minus ten-degree environment, they can maintain growth activity."
Smith nodded repeatedly, taking out a little notebook to quickly jot down notes.
"Technician Lin, is your data accurate?" Director Chen interrupted from the back, trying to regain some presence, "Earlier, nothing was growing in Mr. Bai’s greenhouse."
Lin Wan Yi turned around, looking at the ashen-faced Bai Tingting.
"It’s normal that Mr. Bai couldn’t grow anything," Lin Wan Yi said clearly, though softly, "Because the waste draft she stole from my desk had intentionally incorrect fertilizer ratios. Such ratios would not just kill seeds but also produce toxic gases."
The meeting room fell completely silent.
Bai Tingting’s legs gave way, and she slumped to the floor: "You... you did it on purpose!"
"Science doesn’t allow for theft and deceit," Lin Wan Yi looked down at her, "How dare you experiment when you can’t even differentiate between dead and live seeds?"
The director’s face turned as black as the bottom of a pot. He pointed to Bai Tingting on the floor and roared, "Director Chen! Is this the ’talent’ you arranged? As of today, Bai Tingting is immediately suspended! You, as the office director, must submit a thorough report!"
Director Chen trembled, nodding repeatedly, too scared to utter a word in defense.
Smith paid no attention to this drama. His attention was fully captured by the tomatoes in the basket.
"Ms. Lin, are these also a product of improved soil?" he asked, pointing to the ripe tomatoes.
"These are companion crops from the same experimental field, primarily used to test soil toxin residues." Lin Wan Yi picked up a tomato and handed it over, "Completely natural and pollution-free, please try it."
Smith accepted the tomato skeptically and took a bite.
The juice burst forth.
The sweet flavor, nourished by spiritual energy, exploded in his mouth, with flesh so delicate and without the slightest hint of sourness. It was the best tomato he had ever tasted.
"Amazing! This is a miracle!" Smith enthusiastically gave a thumbs up, "Ms. Lin, your agricultural technology far exceeds my expectations! On behalf of the delegation, I formally propose a long-term agricultural technology exchange and equipment assistance agreement with your bureau!"
The meeting room erupted into thunderous applause.
The director, beaming with excitement, stepped forward, shaking Lin Wan Yi’s hand vigorously.
"Technician Lin! You’ve made a significant contribution!" The director turned to everyone, announcing loudly, "From today onwards, Comrade Lin Wan Yi will be the core leader of the suburban agricultural improvement project! The bureau’s funding and personnel are at your full disposal! Anyone who doesn’t cooperate can leave immediately!"
Bai Tingting, in the corner, bit her lip hard, tears messing up the face cream on her face. She had schemed so hard to step over Lin Wan Yi, only to inadvertently catapult her to the highest position.
After the applause died down, Smith looked at the wheat stalks with lingering interest.
"Ms. Lin, the growth rate of these crops is astounding," Smith requested, "We are very interested in understanding their growth states at various stages. Are there any dynamic video records available?"
"Yes," Lin Wan Yi nodded. She had foreseen this and had Jiang Zhou modify an old camera to take a reel of film.
"Go! Bring out the projector!" The director immediately instructed the staff.
Two staff members wheeled a semi-old iron projector from the storeroom next door and placed it at the end of the long table.
Lin Wan Yi took a metal film canister from her bag and handed it to the staff.
The staff skillfully loaded the film and drew the curtains in the meeting room. The room darkened.
The staff took the plug and inserted it into the wall socket, pressing the projector’s red switch.
"Snap!"
A sharp pop sounded.
A thick, acrid smoke billowed from the projector’s casing, and the bulb in front of the lens shattered into a heap of glass shards.
