Chapter 317: Custom Weapon Order
Chapter 317: Custom Weapon Order
Roamer agreed almost immediately to what Axel and the two girls asked for.
It was as if he wasn’t even worried about letting the three of them see their dimension’s defenses. Or that they’re confident that even with Axel’s skills and understanding, that he wouldn’t figure out a way to break past their defenses.
Or maybe, they believe that even if he leaked it to their enemies, they would still be able to handle it.
Either way, the three humans plus one robot went on to spend three hours of time.
Roamer led the way to the first place. The closest one. Eve’s requested tour of the Weapons Factory.
Along the way, Eve kept on asking relevant questions to Roamer, on which he answered promptly without even trying to hide anything. This did make Eve’s mood better, but Axel’s expression was turning sour with their conversation getting so enthusiastic.
At some point, the two of them had completely stopped acknowledging that Ria and Axel was even there. He walked a step or two behind the rest, arms crossed, saying nothing. Just watching.
About 30 minutes later, they finally arrived at their first destination.
[This is the factory where we make most of our public-facing weapons. Feel free to look around.]
Axel looked up, staring at the gigantic manufacturing facility.
From the outside, it looked almost like a rectangular building about a hundred meters tall. Its walls made of shiny metal, cold and inorganic, but the sound of operation from within gave it a hint of activity, life, and warmth.
Entering, the three were quickly greeted by gigantic manufacturing lines. Conveyor belts, mechanical arms, and various machines could be seen scattered here and there.
The noise alone was enough to make conversation difficult—a constant, overlapping drone of motors, presses, and things Axel couldn’t put a name to.
One thing that was unmistakable was that the place was chaotic.
On top of that, you could see parts of weapons being manufactured or assembled. All automatically through robotics. Objects that caught not just Eve’s eyes, but even Axel’s. He didn’t say anything about it, but his gaze lingered longer than he probably intended.
[Sorry for the clutter. This design was chosen for best efficiency, so we didn’t take into consideration humans going for a tour in here. It might be tight, but please feel free to explore.]
Although he said that, it’s not like there was nowhere to walk through.
There were the paths of maintenance bots scattered here and there, allowing the three to look around without needing to interfere with the actual manufacturing process. Narrow, but navigable. As long as none of them did anything stupid, they’d be fine.
Eve looked around with great attention, her lips curling up into a thin smile. Her eyes jumping from one machine to the next, never quite landing long enough before something else stole her attention.
"What is this? And this... Woah, so this is how you make bores? What about this?"
She moved here and there, making it hard for Ria and Axel to even catch up.
Roamer, in Ria’s embrace even now, just answered all her questions without flinching. Almost as if he knew everything and could answer any question she threw at him perfectly. No pausing, no hedging. Just answers, one after another.
"Then, can you make me a specific design?" Finally, Eve came down with her penultimate request.
Roamer’s lights flickered, beeped, and booped for a few seconds, making Eve feel nervous but expectant, before a reply arrived.
[It is possible, but a custom order is at least twice as expensive as the normal model. Just warning you beforehand. And once the order is placed, we can accept a few modifications, but no cancellation.]
From the way he spoke, it seemed as if someone had done just that before, making him hesitate to accept Eve’s order without first laying out the ground rules.
"Then, I’ll pay in advance. Will that make you feel at ease?" She said. "But I want my gun to be true to the specs I want. I don’t mind even if you go overbudget by a bit."
Among Axel’s people, only Eve and her sniper troops took the hot weapon path. The rest, either barehanded, using cold weapons, or straight up magic.
But now, even with her new rifle made by the dwarves able to power up her shots using mana, she was still not satisfied with it. The more she used it, the more she found things to fix, to upgrade, or was simply dissatisfied with.
A grip that didn’t sit quite right. A trigger pull that was just a hair too heavy. It was a habit of hers—always chasing after something better, something closer to ideal, even when what she had was already exceptional by standard measure.
[That should be fine.] Roamer responded favorably. [Do you have a blueprint ready? Or if not, then a specified spec sheet for the weapon is enough.]
"I don’t have a blueprint, but you can use my current gun as a reference. As for the spec sheet..." Eve answered fast, before taking a stack of paper from her inventory. "Here. It’s all written down here."
Seeing this, even Roamer was taken aback.
It wasn’t a single sheet of paper stating her requirements, but most likely a novel’s worth. Pages and pages, front and back, filled edge to edge with Eve’s handwriting.
Furthermore, it wasn’t a digital copy, but rather, a physical one—handwritten, no less—requiring more time to actually read through!
Still, out of respect, Roamer didn’t flip out and accepted it. After giving it a skim—roughly a few seconds’ worth—he gave Eve an estimate.
[For a weapon of this scale, it would take us a week at least. Is that fine?]
"Only one week? I thought it would take a month!" She gasped, genuinely caught off guard for the first time since they arrived. "Of course, it’s fine. I have no problems with it."
After that, Roamer asked a few things for confirmation, then made her sign a contract regarding everything they talked about.
The whole process was surprisingly smooth, considering the sheer amount Eve had written down. Roamer didn’t complain once. All in all, they spent about an hour finishing things up.
Just like that, a single stop actually took them half of the three hours they needed to spend.
"Next is my destination, right?!"
And right after that, Ria jumped lightly, putting pressure on the poor Roomba tight under her embrace. Roamer let out a short, flat beep in protest.
"Let’s go!"
