Chapter 159: Patrol Begins
Chapter 159: Patrol Begins
A small commotion broke out in the group.
Many people looked puzzled and asked in hushed tones, "Green card? What green card?"
"I heard it's a privilege card that allows you to freely choose patrol times and locations, instead of just waiting to be assigned like we are..."
Lin Feng felt Evelyn gently touch his arm beside him.
He immediately understood, pulled Evelyn along, and walked through the side of the group, under the curious, surprised, or scrutinizing gazes of the crowd, until they reached Qin Yue.
"Officer, we have green cards."
Lin Feng quickly took the green card out of his uniform pocket and handed it over with both hands.
Qin Yue took the card, gently rubbed its surface with her fingertips, then looked up at Lin Feng, her gaze seemingly filled with a hint of approval.
Her voice remained steady, but her tone rose slightly:
"Impressive, Lin Feng. It seems you're better able to adapt to the 'rules' here than I thought."
After saying that, she stopped looking at Lin Feng and quickly tapped her fingers on the desktop touchscreen to bring up the intern prison guard scheduling interface.
"A partnership?" she asked, her tone returning to its businesslike efficiency.
"I'm in a group with Evelyn," Lin Feng replied immediately, gesturing to his companion beside him.
Evelyn met Qin Yue's gaze with composure, her lips slightly pursed.
Qin Yue quickly typed on the screen and completed the recording of the partnership relationship.
"Patrol hours?" she asked again.
Lin Feng stated clearly, "We are responsible for the 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM time slots."
These two times are when prisoners have just finished eating and are most relaxed and sleepy, making them relatively safer.
Qin Yue continued, "There are two options for the patrol area: above ground and underground. Which one do you choose?"
Lin Feng replied without hesitation: "On the ground."
Only a fool would choose to go underground.
Qin Yue nodded slightly, completed the settings on the touchscreen, and then took out two metal badges, each about half the size of a palm, from the metal box on the table.
The badges glowed faintly red, and she handed them to Lin Feng and Evelyn respectively.
"This is a patrol recorder," she said calmly. "Please wear it in a conspicuous place on your left chest."
"It will automatically record your route, the time you spend in each stop, and... audio clips of special circumstances."
"Use this to collect your sidearm from the central armory later."
The two men took the badge; it was slightly cool to the touch and quite heavy. They did as instructed and pinned it above their left breast pocket.
Qin Yue handed each of them a copy of the "Prisoner Patrol Record Form" and then watched them turn and leave the duty room.
The two stopped outside the door. Since it was still early, they decided to wait for Vassim and the others to go to the central armory together.
While waiting, the next group of people also completed their assignments—20:00 and 23:00, underground Δ area.
One of the people in the group was Marika, the chosen one from the White Elephant Kingdom, who had previously tried to buy information from Lin Feng.
Upon hearing that she would be inspecting the underground district late at night, she turned pale and trembled as she offered Qin Yue a bribe, promising to burn a hundred billion in paper money for her when she returned.
Before she could finish speaking, Qin Yue raised her hand and slapped Marika hard across the back. Marika staggered and fell to the ground, blood splattering between her teeth.
"Considering this is your first offense, I'll spare your life." Qin Yue's voice was as cold as iron. "If you dare to offer bribes again, you'll be executed on the spot."
Marika covered her face and stepped out the door. The moment her eyes met Lin Feng's, a strange glint flashed in them.
Evelyn took half a step forward and coldly snapped, "Get out!"
The agent's natural intimidation made Marika shrink back, and she finally lowered her head and staggered away.
Wasim and Anna drew the ground area at 11 a.m. and the underground Δ area at 2 p.m.
The two remained relatively calm—although there was an underground patrol, fortunately it was 2 PM, not the most dangerous time of day, and as long as they handled it carefully, there shouldn't be any major problems.
Ryuichi Kamishiro and Noah drew the underground Δ zone at 9 a.m. and the above-ground prison at 3 p.m.
Ryuichi Kamishiro frowned, and Noah also seemed somewhat uneasy.
Vassim patted Ryuichi Kamishiro on the shoulder and comforted him:
"Don't worry too much. Most prisoners aren't very active at this time of day. Just be careful, nothing will happen."
Ryuichi Kamishiro nodded silently.
The six men then went to the central armory and received their sidearms.
Each gun is equipped with six calming rounds.
The weapon distributor was a mechanical octopus. As it handed out the guns, it repeated the instructions for use in a calm electronic voice. The six people nodded to indicate that they understood.
After a short rest, it was nearly 8:55.
Lin Feng and Evelyn exchanged a glance and headed towards the ground floor prison area.
At the other end of the corridor, Ryuichi Kamishiro and Noah took a deep breath and walked toward the heavy metal door leading to the underground cell.
........................
At 9:00 a.m. sharp, a low and regular electronic notification sound rang out inside the prison, marking the start of a new round of patrols.
Lin Feng and Evelyn arrived at the first cell—cell 101.
In the cell was a man wearing his underwear on the outside, with a stubble beard, sitting quietly on the edge of the bed.
His condition was clearly visible through the sturdy railing.
Lin Feng picked up the record board and quickly filled in the "Prison Situation Inspection Record Form":
Cell number: 101
Behavioral state: Sitting still
Facial expression: Staring blankly
Plate status: Eaten
Special circumstances: None
Note: Underwear is worn on the outside; behavioral characteristics are stable; no aggressive tendencies have been observed.
After making their notes, the two continued their patrol forward.
Most of the prisoners along the way were unusually quiet. Even the lecherous ghost who had been pestering Evelyn on the second floor yesterday only lazily raised his eyes when he caught sight of her today, without making any more frivolous moves.
Until they reached the door of cell 218...
Noticing the footsteps of the two prison guards outside the door, the woman huddled in the corner of the cell, clutching an old rag doll tightly in her arms, suddenly stiffened and abruptly raised her head, which had been hanging low.
She practically sprang to her feet, clutching the sparse-haired, stained-dress rag doll, and rushed to the iron railing.
Her face lacked the numbness or violence often seen in prisoners; instead, it was filled with an almost obsequious eagerness.
"police officer!"
Evelyn paused, her hand instinctively resting on the pistol at her waist.
The female prisoner used her withered fingers to gently comb through the doll's tangled hair, one stroke at a time.
"Officers, look at my daughter...isn't she beautiful? She's been very good today, she hasn't cried at all."
Evelyn hesitated for a moment, but for the sake of maintaining stability and observation, she chose to comply.
"Yes, very... pretty, very well-behaved."
These words were like flipping a terrifying switch.
The fake gentleness on the female prisoner's face froze instantly, then crumbled like shattered porcelain.
Her eyes widened to their limit, her pupils shrinking to pinpoints, all "maternal instinct" replaced by a bone-chilling despair and madness.
"You're lying—!!!"
