Northern Bears 4: Pandamonium is now available at Changeling Press!
In the continuing saga of Bear With Me… Nuka Kisoun has been looking forward to his holiday in China for months. Two weeks as the fourth wheel for his cousin Theo and Theo’s two mates may not sound like an adventure, but he’s game for anything. Only his relaxing vacation turns into pandemonium when Nuka discovers their sweet little tour guide is his mate. It’s every man for himself when panda shifter Jackie Yu meets a big, bad polar bear who plays for keeps.
Finally reaching the hotel, Jackie held open the door. “Oh, I forgot to mention. If you need more money, they always have an exchange in the hotel, and it will always be the same price no matter where you go. Some places also have ATMs so if you find a place you might want to use it. We’ll be going to a lot of markets, and it’s cash only in there.”
Nuka let the door close behind him and finally was able to breathe in without the myriad of smells clogging his senses. Wait a minute…
He could smell bamboo and something spicier underlying it. Something familiar, but just different enough to catch his attention. Nuka inhaled again before turning to Jackie in shock. Jackie was staring back at him in stunned silence.
“Are you –?”
“Are you –?”
Nuka leaned closer. “You’re…?”
Jackie nodded. “You are too. What? You don’t smell like…”
Nuka looked around before pulling Jackie’s arm and moving into a small enclosure off the lobby. “I told you I’m from the Northwest Territories in Canada? Well, think of a big bear that lives in the Arctic, and that’ll make things clear.”
Jackie smirked. “We’re in China. It’s kind of obvious what I am. What’s black and white and furry all over?”
Nuka stared into Jackie’s black eyes and started to laugh. A panda? Jackie was a panda shifter? “Well, that should make things interesting.”
Jackie nodded, before looking Nuka up and down. “Should be fun.”
Nuka didn’t know what to say to that. He ducked his head and pursed his lips.
Jackie laughed. “You better go on off to bed. We’re leaving early, remember? We’re catching the bus to the Great Wall tomorrow.”
Right. Well, they’d have plenty of time to talk later. “Good night.”
“Night!” Jackie waved and went toward the elevator.
Nuka watched him leave before going into the courtyard and walking across to their wing of the hotel. He entered his room to see all three boys sitting on his bed waiting for him.
“Shouldn’t you guys be having sex or something?”
“Stop it. Did you get water?” Theo asked.
Nuka dropped the bag on the small writing desk in front of his bed. It was fancier than anything he’d ever seen in a hotel room back home. Intricately carved out of wood, with a thin piece of glass over the top, it would fit in to some antique shop. It also matched the bed frames and the small chest that the TV sat on. He wondered if all the hotels were going to be like this.
Sitting down on the other twin bed, he finally looked up at his cousin. He figured they should know about Jackie as soon as possible. The fact that he couldn’t keep it to himself played a small role in that. He wasn’t sure what to feel.
“Of course I did. So, interesting question… What do you get when you add two polar bears, two pizzly bears and a panda bear?”
“Apparently the smell was getting to more than just our surface senses.”
“Holy shit,” Robin exclaimed. “Jackie’s one of us?”
“He’s a shifter. I wouldn’t be comparing him to any of you weirdoes.”
Theo mock-swiped him. “What are the freaking odds?”
“He moves faster than I thought a panda would,” Christopher commented. They all turned to look at him.
“Say what?” Nuka asked. What the heck did that mean?
“Well, haven’t you ever seen a video of pandas? They sit around and eat a ton of food and that’s about it. He moves way faster than I would have thought.”
“You can’t exactly compare us to our animal halves either,” Nuka replied.
“Yeah, have you ever seen a bear penis? Theo here definitely resembles more of a horse.” Robin giggled.
“And on that note, you’re all getting kicked out of my room. Take your water, you pervs. And don’t make a lot of noise. These walls are paper thin.”
