I have a 100 pound German Shepherd who never ceases to amaze me with his intelligence. I’ve never had a dog this smart. I’ve seen dogs this smart, my grandfather has owned several. There is just something about how he treats his dogs they become like little humans. Anyway, back to Odin.
Odin is a silver and black German Shepherd. In other words, his tan isn’t exactly tan it’s more of a white. What little tan he has is very very pale. For those of you that have read The Tin Star, Fred was based off of Odin. And yes, he’s really that smart.
Recently, I got a new car. A nice new car and we decided to clear out our garage for it. North Texas is known for it’s hail storms so we wanted to protect it. So now I enter and exit the house through the garage door. Well Odin always runs to the front door when we are leaving so he can get his “goodbye pet”. Yesterday he ran out of my bedroom ahead of me, knowing I was leaving. I pass the front door and no Odin. Hmmm, strange. I get to the garage door and he’s sitting in front of it waiting for me. I laughed, I was impressed. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Well he’s only 4 but still… Actually, I didn’t teach him, he taught himself.

It’s always amazing how fast some dogs pick up on new routines of their owners. As long as the routine is constant for a few days, they adapt fast. Oden sounds like a great dog!
