Down Right Delicious
(Maura Anderson)
Troy nursed the beer he’d been handed as soon as he’d arrived at the party. Any desire he’d ever had to get stupid drunk, just because he could, had been purged from his system in his first six months of college. Now he’d rather get his good time by watching everyone else drink themselves silly and pay for it the next day. At least his drinking was legal.
This was the last get together before Spring Break. Not that Troy was going anywhere during the break. He wasn’t much into the crazy party scene and his family was too far away for an easy visit. It was a good opportunity to actually study, though.
Hell, his own pep-talk wasn’t actually making him feel any less lonely. Even in the crowd of tipsy revelers, the ache of loneliness never actually left him.
“Hey, Troy.” Pam’s smiling face peeked around the doorframe. “Want to go out for some real food?” His roommate’s ex was a nice girl and had only dumped Austin when the stupid oaf took advantage of her good nature one too many times.
“Sure.” Relief flooded through him and he ditched the half-full beer bottle on the crowded coffee table.
“Cool. We’re going to Eve’s Cafe. Want to meet us there or carpool?”
“Us? Which us?”
Pam gave him a sly wink. “Just a few friends of mine, that’s all.”
A trickle of unease ran down his spine. Being gay wasn’t something he advertised but he never really hid it either. Austin knew he was gay and Troy assumed he’d have told his girlfriend. Maybe not, though. God he hoped she wasn’t trying to set him up with one of her girlfriends.
Oh well, no help for it now. He really didn’t want to stay here and he could shut down any attempts at watchmaking later.
“I’ll meet you there.”
* * * * *
Derek slouched in the booth and waited for Pam to show up. He’d taken a rare night off from bussing tables at his family’s restaurant to study but he needed food and some company. One more day of his family trying to pry into whether he had a girlfriend yet would surely drive him over the edge, let alone his upcoming business plan presentation.
God he wished he could just tell his parents the truth. He was gay and that was the end of it. It wouldn’t change and he’d have to tell them sometime but it might cost him his close-knit family. He couldn’t bear to lose his family.
Pam’s voice caught his attention before he could see her. Damn, her laugh carried, sounding a bit like a crazed leprechaun. On speed.
She flung herself into the booth across from him and motioned for her friend, Chelle, to slide in next to her. Practically vibrating, Pam took a long drink of the water already on the table and grinned at him.
Uh oh. It never boded well when Pam grinned. Even though they’d gone through a lot of high school together, they’d never been more than buddies. That had been plenty to teach him just what she was capable of.
“Are we ready to order?” He could only hope to escape before he had to clean up after whatever she was up to. She was one of the few friends who knew he was gay and he really wanted to relax and just be himself tonight. That didn’t appear to be in the cards, though.
“Sure – but Troy’ll be here any minute. He needed to be rescued from the party Tom was throwing.”
“Who is Troy?”
“He’s a friend of Austin’s. A sane and really nice one, too. And cute, but he’s gay – unfortunately for most of my friends.”
Before Derek could warn her off, a well-built man in jeans and a thermal knit shirt slid onto the bench seat next to him and shook his dark-haired head.
“I didn’t mind the rescue but tell me you aren’t up to something, Pam.”
Smirk turned to guilt and Pam drank more water in what was an obvious attempt to stall.
Troy groaned and turned toward Derek, brilliant blue eyes mesmerized his own and a brilliant smile lit up the other man’s face. The jolt of lust raced to his cock and suddenly Pam’s plot seemed downright delicious.
