Happy 2009 to everyone. Man, I’m glad to see the year change. 2008 brought some really good things but was a huge year of turmoil as well. That turmoil isn’t over yet but I’m hoping 2009, as a whole, will have less of it.
Giving Thanks has done extremely well and I’m thrilled that my first m/m offering has been so well received. FINALLY I’ve gotten Bittersweet within 2k of being ready for the test readers. This story has fought me for every word and I’m not sure why.
The last few days have brought some great news on the awards front, both for myself and for other Fiction with Friction authors.
Preditors and Editors is open right now for voting and you can see the nominations and vote (or nominate something else) at http://www.critters.org/predpoll/. Polls are open 1/1 to 1/14/2009.
Love Romances and More Cafe awards nominations are announced on the LR&M Cafe Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LoveRomancesCafe/. Voting begins at noon ET, 1/5/2009 and runs until 1/17/2009. Voting takes place on the Polls section of the Yahoo loop so you must be a member of the group to vote. You can check the messages section of the loop for the nominees list in various categories.
CAPA (Cupid and Psyche Awards) have finalists announced but the winners won’t be announced until Valentine’s Day. These awards are reviewer’s choice awards from The Romance Studio reviewers and are not open to general voting but quite an honor to be nominated. You can see the list of nominees at http://www.theromancestudio.com/capa.php. (My nominated book in this case is a het, sorry, but there are other m/m authors in there!)
As part of the New Year, I’ve tried to step back and take a good look at where I’m spending my time and energy and then asking myself if that’s the correct amount of time and energy for each task. One of the things that will have to give, unfortunately, is flash fiction. I put up 42 pieces of Flash Fiction last year but I need to better allocate that time to finishing a bunch of the stories I’ve started and especially those with contracts. I have a poll on my blog right now that I’m letting run until the end of January to ask people which of the options they would prefer. It’s my way of trying to get an idea what my readers would prefer. At the end of January, I’ll make a decision on what to do. It’s a hard thing for me, I’m rather attached to both the Friday Flashes and pleasing people but there is just so much to do.
I have many m/m projects planned for 2009, including my series called “Hidden Depths” that involves a forensic geologist and a sniper and my m/m celtic rock band series called “Bran’s Visions”. I know I’ll be in LOTS of trouble if they aren’t forthcoming!
Here’s hoping the rumors of layoffs at the EDJ don’t affect me or, if they do, I find a new day job quickly. Lots of emotional turmoil kills my muse. I also hope my oldest son, currently deployed in Iraq, stays safe and healthy in 2009.
Is there anything you’re hoping for in 2009?
