Both this year and last year, I joined NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. You are supposed to write a 50,000 word novel from scratch in November. Both years I began with good intentions, excitement and determination. Both years my world went to hell in a handbasket.

This year I have my oldest son deploying to a hot area of Iraq in November.

My Evil Day Job reorganized my group and I suddenly find myself with a new boss (good) but trying to solve all the problems the previous boss ignored over the space of a year. Of course we now have to solve them RIGHT NOW which has put an enormous strain on my work day. I literally hit the office running at 6:30 am and don’t stop until I leave at 2:30. Add to that the rumors of RIF (Reduction in Force – a polite term for layoff) will hit our division. Because my prior boss hosed our team before taking off one day, I feel VERY vulnerable, despite 13 years with this company. Frankly, much as I would love to get rid of the EDJ, I can’t afford to do so and would hate to do so on those terms. So this has the great effect of keeping me awake at night, worrying. I don’t do well with financial or work insecurity.

This has really put the smack-down on my time to write and my ability to be able to focus on writing.

Today I was thinking about it and wondering why the universe seems to jinx my NaNo plans. Then it occurred to me – maybe my NaNo plans jinx my universe!

Next year I’ll try an experiment. No matter how hopeful I feel, I won’t sign up for NaNo and we’ll see what my universe decides to do.

If it’s true, there may be no more NaNo attempts for me!

(What a relief).
