Most of y’all have probably heard by now, but I just found out a few minutes ago. Heath Ledger is dead.)
This hit me like a physical blow. I’m not sure why. I mean obviously, he was a young man, a father, still at the beginning of what promised to be a wonderful career. It would be terrible and sad regardless. But for some reason, his death hit me much harder than I would’ve thought.
Maybe it’s because I had such respect for him as an actor. He chose roles he liked rather than what looked like making the most money, and he played them beautifully. IMHO, he was well on his way to becoming another Johnny Depp, creating a legendary career out of pure, undeniable talent rather than relying on his looks. I can’t say that I know much about Heath Ledger the person, but Heath Ledger the actor did have my respect. I don’t know. Whatever the reason, I am very sad right now, and my heart goes out to his family and friends.
I am not going to be able to watch the new Batman movie without crying. Brokeback Mountain, during which I went through two pockets full of Kleenex the first time and nearly as many every time after that, is going to rip me apart now :-(

This reminded me of when River Phoenix died … like ten years ago? So sad.

That is sad. I really enjoyed watching him work, and for reasons other than that he was hot

My heart broke when I heard the news early this afternoon. I feel like I’ve been in a fog since then. I’m still in shock. I’ve enjoyed watching his movies since he was in 10 Things I Hate About You. He blew me away with his performance in Brokeback Mountain. I’m so sad that his life has ended at such a young age. I hurt for his family, his daughter, his friends, his loved ones, and for all the brilliant performances he would have given the world. It’s so, so tragic.

I just read it myself. I totally agree. I really enjoyed him as a character actor. I cried, basically wailed all through Brokeback Mountain.
Of course, there is no way for me to know what was the trigger to this awful decision, if he had killed himself. But we as a society need to stop denigrating therapy. Especially with young men. I am a black woman and I see how we force our men to suppress their emotions. To just buckle up and take it. I wish that this was the worse kind of typo.
I hope the family is right that this was an accidental death.
Gosh, we got to start talking to each other.
Dammit, this is just awful.

Zandia, you’re absolutely right. Whether his death was deliberate or not, our society really does discourage young men from expressing themselves, and from seeking help when they need it. We tell them, in all sorts of ways, that they should be tough, suck it up, just deal with it, and the results can be so, so tragic :-(
