I just finished a manuscript. The second time for the same manuscript. I will finish it at least once more before I turn it in to my editor and at least once more after that before it’s actually released.
Finishing is weird. It’s what I’ve worked up to for a few months now and what I’ve craved for the past few weeks. I don’t know about other authors, but when I get just past the middle of a manuscript, I so very much want to just finish it, be done with it and move on to the next thing. It takes a lot out of you to run a bunch of characters lives, after all.
Finishing brings about its own set of fears. Did I do it right? Did I say it right? Will it entertain? Is it hot? I’m set now for a few weeks of worry as people start to read the fruits of my imagination and tell me if I done good. And that’s just scary. People actually READING what I wrote? Even after a few years of doing this, it still amazes me.
Finishing has always been weird for me because my characters’ lives don’t end at the end of a book. They never have. It was one of my worries when I started publishing. I’ve always had trouble coming up with “the end” because it wasn’t really the end. They all got up the next day and had to deal with that. My method of writing follows peoples’ lives and those don’t end until you die. And sometimes not then because you’re leaving people behind, aren’t you? And they’ve got lives. So I’ve had to train myself to find the end of this particular chapter of my characters’ lives.
Finishing also means that now I need to move on to the next thing. Next to finishing, starting is even more daunting.
(BTW, yes, it’s Faith that I just finished *g*)
