I just finished write-a-thon (the May edition). It’s an epic race between two writers who want to get the words out but, for various reasons, are having trouble. At stake is a $20 Starbucks card.
The contest is fun and, more importantly, makes me write. Whatever was stalling me before fades and my fingers do their little tango with the keyboard.
When the keys go silent, though, I pause to wonder about the things that hold me back. So far, here’s what I’ve come up with:

* feeling overwhelmed (I have to write how much?)

* fear (if I mess this up, no one will want to represent/buy/read my book)

* out of coffee (I need that Starbucks card)

This round was short (barely two weeks), but we produced some words and are both happy. The momentum we created will get us through June and July, and when it starts to fade, the August edition of write-a-thon will begin.
In the meantime, I’ll continue working on the WIP. Writing is a solitary field, so it’s nice to have something that challenges me to work harder and gives me a reason to send e-mails with subject lines like “hah!” (and recieve responses like “enjoy it while you can. You know I’m going to come up from behind you”).
(She did, but her line inspired me. Thanks to a fifty-word snippet, I won)
I’ll soon be enjoying my card. The truth, though, is that the prize is a McGuffin. While we both enjoy Starbucks cards, the real reward is the writing itself.

That’s terrific! You’re right that writing is solitary. Sometimes it’s hard to face that blank page. Cool that you found something fun to keep you typing :)

    Thanks :)

I’d ask you if you wanted to do a write-a-thon with me, but I fear you’d kick my ass (though I would enjoy reading the end result. Hmm . . .)

heh You’d probably win. Unless we happened to call it during the exact time that I hit my stride. It’s a random cycle. Nothing for weeks then BAM I’ll write almost an entire story. *sigh*
