Back when I was working on the Shadow Hunt edits, I discovered that I had a tendency to repeat certain words. Hoping to imprint this on my mind forever, I made a list and created a little drinking game.
It was a fun little game, and now that I’m working on another WIP, I remember not to use “though” too often and to be very critical of how many ellipses I use.Every once in a while, though (argh!), I stumble across other habits. I’m thinking this calls for another drinking game.
* “though” keeps showing up (one sip)
* villain is doing evil for evil sake. Needs better motivation (one sip)
* hero is doing good for good’s sake. Also needs better motivation (two sips)
* remembered to approach the story as if it was real life. Problem is, characters know they’re outnumbered and want to call the police/flee the city (three sips)
* brilliant new story idea occurs to me. Must fight it off and continue working on this project (four sips)
* have spent so much time setting up the villain as a real character, he has begun to outshine the hero (chug)

I’m soooo not playing this game. My low tolerance for alcohol not withstanding…
The ellipses alone would have me on the floor 3 chapters in.

I’d have problems with the other story idea. That happens to me ALLL the time. Dangerous little game there, hon, unless you write well under the influence *g*
